Fashion Forward: Menswear Trends Till Date

From tailcoats to zoot suits to bell-bottom pants and everything in between,  the last 100 plus years of men’s fashion have seen a lot of styles come and go.

In the early 1900s, men were accustomed to “middle-class men’s suit” which consisted of three pieces: the jacket, the trousers, and the vest (known as a waistcoat at the time).

The suit trend continued up to the ’30s. The end of the ’30s gave way to the “Swing” era.

When swing music, the jitterbug, and swing dancing hit the scene, the zoot suit was born. They were thought to be both sharp and rebellious especially since they were originally popular with gangsters and younger generations.

The 1940s saw men dress as austere as possible, and hereafter assumed a manner of simplicity with little or no detail. Dressing flashy or expensive was considered a blasphemy to patriotism (as all money and fabric needed to be reserved to help those in uniform).

The 50s were a bit more casual but it was boring for teenagers and young adults.

Teenagers rebelled against the adult fashion for the first time and created their greaser subculture.

The ’60s was a revolutionary period for men’s fashion. It was more adventurous. Fashion from the ’70s was considered “fast fashion”, a reflection of the era’s air of spontaneity and indulgence.

The ’80s clothes for men were less outlandish. In this era, brands like Levi’s mattered. The ’90s rejection of stuffiness and formality gave room for men’s fashion to be more casual.

The early 2000s saw the climb of fast fashion. Clothing was cheaper and everyone was able to save up for designer accessories.

The early 2010s saw a revival of the ’20s prep style, along with an increasing rise in fast fashion and globalization. Smart casual looks, athleisure, along hipster fashions were on-trend.

Menswear has been influenced by music, war, the economy, women’s fashion, cars, gangs, celebrities, sports, and so much more.

From the revival of florals to the continued widening of silhouettes, 2021 has a lot of men’s fashion trends to embrace.

Menswear trends have always been able to capture the spirit of the time dating back to the austere suits of the Depression-era 1930s and laid-back leather jackets of 1950s greasers to the shiny opulence of the 1980s.

Some menswear trends fade as quickly as they come about, while others have stood the test of time and remain fashion staples today.
